The objectives of this manual are to develop the aptitude of medical student´s fundamental work and using the evaluation methods of health, public health system and methods of assessment of work results research.
After getting acquainted with Medical Statistics the student must know:
- Definition, tasks and sections of medical (sanitary) statistics.
- Methods of health and public health system evaluation and methods of assessment of results received by calculating indices and coefficients.
- Methods to compare and evaluation different statistical indices of health and public health system.
- Methods to evaluate factor and indices correlations of health and public health system - correlation coefficient, chi-square.
- Methods of analyzing the dynamics (development) of health and public health system - dynamics series (line).
- Graphical representations in statistics, their different forms.
After getting acquainted with Medical Statistics the student must be able to:
- Use the evaluation methods of health and public health system and methods assessment of work results research.
- Calculate statistical indices and coefficients in health and public health system.
- Evaluate and compare indices of health and public health system, draw a deduction-conclusion, formulate proposals and give practical recommendations.
Statistics is a science studying the rules of mass phenomena by a method of generalizing indicators. A prominent feature of statistics is its application for studying not individual, but the mass phenomena as only at a large number of supervisions it is possible to reveal general laws of the studied process. Thus the statistics is based on the probability theory and the law of the big numbers. Now it is possible to tell with confidence, that the statistics has found wide application in all fields of person´s activity; and there is also no branch of a science in which statistical methods would not be used.
The medicine as a science takes original position in system of sciences. It, on the one hand, is a biological science, studying a human body at various levels, development stages, in various diseases. And a set of mathematical methods and the ways used in biology and medicine, has received the name of biostatistics. On the other hand it is a social, public science, studying health of the population and influence of diverse factors on it. The medicine, as a rule, faces multifactor of the phenomena, extreme complexity of communications and their mobility. Here therefore classical methods of the mathematical analysis are not always suitable for medical researches. The special branch of statistics - the medical or sanitary statistics - adapts the most important mathematical-statistical methods for medicine tasks, and also develops principles, ways and forms of their use.
The medical statistics is a science studying public health and public health services by means of mathematical modes and methods, and developing measures for population health improvement.
The medical statistics is subdivided into some sections: statistics of public health, the statistics of public health services, the statistics of demonstrative medicine or the scientific statistics.
The statistics of public health develops methods of gathering, processing and the analysis of the public health characterizing data.
The statistics of public health services collects processes and analyzes data about medical institutions activity.
The statistics of demonstrative medicine allows studying expediency of introduction of new methods of diagnostics, treatment and preventive maintenance; analyzes the data for making true clinical decisions.
